Frequently Asked Question

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine developed more than 200 years ago. Its philosophy considers physical, mental and emotional symptoms as interconnected aspects of the whole person.

Homeopathic prescribing is individualised. Rather than selecting a remedy solely according to a diagnosis, the homeopath considers the person’s particular symptoms, health history, sensitivities and overall presentation.

Homeopathy may be used alongside conventional and other forms of healthcare.

How does homeopathy work?

Homeopathy is based on the principle of “like cures like” and on the use of remedies prepared through repeated dilution and succussion.

Within homeopathic philosophy, a remedy is selected because its recognised picture resembles the individual pattern of symptoms experienced by the person. The prescription may include one remedy or a carefully considered sequence, depending on the practitioner’s approach and the person’s presentation.

The scientific interpretation of how homeopathy works remains contested. My role is to explain the homeopathic rationale for your prescription, provide clear instructions and review what you observe after taking it.

What are homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathic remedies are prepared from source materials that may include plants, minerals and other substances. They undergo a process of serial dilution and succussion and are supplied in forms including pills and liquids.

They are different from herbal medicines, aromatherapy oils and nutritional supplements. I obtain or recommend remedies from established homeopathic pharmacies and provide individual instructions on how and when to take them.

How are homeopathic remedies chosen?

There isn't one homeopathic remedy for anxiety, migraines, eczema, PANS/PANDAS or any other particular diagnosis. Instead, remedies are selected according to your individual presentation.

Two people with the same diagnosis may experience different symptomatology. One person's symptoms may be affected by heat, another by cold; one may feel restless and agitated, another exhausted and withdrawn. Their sleep, digestion, fears, energy, medical history and the circumstances surrounding the onset of their symptoms may also be completely different. These individual patterns help me decide which remedies are most relevant and how your treatment schedule look like.

This is why a homeopathic consultation involves considerably more than simply asking what diagnosis you have. Out of the 8000 homeopathic remedies out there, I choose one or several that best suit your situation, and also decide on a potency and dose for you.

How many remedies will I need?

There is no fixed number. Sometimes I prescribe one remedy and observe the response before deciding what comes next. In other cases, particularly with complex or longstanding presentations, I may use more than one remedy or change the prescription over time.

What to expect from a homeopathic consultation?

A homeopathic consultation is a detailed conversation about your symptoms, history and current patterns.

Rather than focusing only on what is “wrong”, we explore how you respond to stress, illness, change and environment. This helps me select the remedy or remedies that most closely match your individual presentation and decide on an appropriate starting prescription and follow-up schedule.

Will I need a follow up consultation?

Often, yes. Follow-ups allow us to review what has changed and decide on the next stage of your prescription. For ongoing concerns, appointments are typically spaced four to ten weeks apart.

What is included in your fee?

Your consultation fee covers much more than our time together. After each appointment, I spend between 30 minutes and 3 hours analysing your case, selecting the most appropriate remedies and preparing your individual prescription with detailed instructions and guidance. You can also email me between appointments with important questions relating to your treatment.

For local clients, remedies are included in the fee. If you live elsewhere in the UK or overseas, I will send you links to the remedies you need from a homeopathic pharmacy that delivers to your location. Remedies are generally inexpensive, usually around £5 for approximately 30 pills - and very often, you will only need to take a few pills and not an entire bottle.

What is the best way to take the remedies?

Remedies are usually taken orally. If in pill form, they are allowed to dissolve under the tongue. You will receive clear guidance on how and when to take them.

Is homeopathy safe for babies and children?

Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted preparations and are used by homeopaths with people of all ages, including babies and children.

Working with children does, however, require careful assessment. Children can change quickly when they are unwell, and homeopathy should never delay appropriate medical care.

I adapt both the consultation and the prescription to the individual child, including their age, sensitivity and overall health.

You can read more about how I work with babies, children and teenagers on my What to Expect page.

Can I use homeopathy alongside medication or other treatments?

Yes. Many of my clients use homeopathy alongside conventional medical treatment, supplements, herbs, psychotherapy or other forms of health care.

Please tell me about any medication, supplements or other treatments you are using, as this helps me understand the complete picture and plan your homeopathic treatment appropriately.

I do not advise clients to stop or alter prescribed medication. Any changes to prescription medication should be discussed with the clinician responsible for prescribing it.

Do I need a diagnosis before seeing you?

No. A medical diagnosis can be very useful, particularly when your symptoms need investigation or monitoring, but you don't need to have a diagnosis before booking a homeopathic consultation.

Homeopathic prescribing is based on your individual presentation rather than the diagnostic label alone.

Is homeopathy scientifically proven?

Homeopathy remains scientifically controversial. If you are interested in the research, you can explore the Homeopathy Research Institute for information.

Do I have to believe in homeopathy for it to work?

No particular belief is required to work with me.

Some of my clients come to homeopathy because they already feel strongly about it. Others are curious but sceptical, or simply want to explore another approach after struggling with their health for a long time.

I'm comfortable with questions and scepticism. You don't need to adopt a particular philosophy - what matters to me is that we can communicate openly, observe what happens and make decisions together based on your responses to different remedies.

How do I know if homeopathy is right for me?

You don't have to decide that homeopathy is right for you forever. You only need to decide whether it is something you would like to explore.

If you would like to understand more about how I work before booking, you can read What to Expect When Working With Me.

If you still have questions, you're also welcome to book a free 20-minute Discovery Call before deciding whether you would like to start treatment.

Can I claim the cost of my homeopathy consultations through health insurance?

If you are based in the UK, quite possibly. I am a registered member of the Society of Homeopaths (RSHom), and a number of UK private health insurance and healthcare cash plans cover consultations with registered homeopaths. Your exact cover will depend on your individual policy, so please check with your provider before booking if you are hoping to claim the cost back.

If you live outside the UK, reimbursement is less straightforward. Some international insurance policies may cover complementary healthcare or homeopathy, but they may not recognise UK professional registrations. It is worth checking with your insurer whether consultations with a UK-registered homeopath are eligible. I am happy to provide an invoice or receipt for your claim.
